What do I do if my son/daughter wants to go to university?

To help your child there are some things that you can do.
1. Help you child identify their interests and abilities.
2. Help them identify their hopes and plans for the future.
3. Help them identify the type of study and work they would lie to pursue.
4. Explore the range of study and jobs available after school.
5. Explore the career options that may suit their abilities and interests.
6. Explore alternative pathways into their chosen field.
7. Explore entry requirements for their chosen course.
8. Work with them to set long term goals for their chosen pathway.
9. Work with them to breakdown long term goals into small achievable steps.
10. Work with them to keep their options open.
11. Work with them to attend university open days and information nights to gain more information.
12. Encourage them to work consistently at school.
13. Encourage them to persevere even when things may get tough.
14. Encourage them to believe in their own ability to succeed.
15. Encourage them to stay focused on their dream.
16. Keep in contact with the Careers Counsellor and other important school staff in your child’s life.
